On November 24, 2009, the Boy Scouts of America, Greater New York City Council announced its intention to pursue a possible sale or conservation easement of William H. Pouch Scout Camp on Staten Island.  William H. Pouch Scout Camp, located at 1465 Manor Road, Staten Island, is a 120-acre wooded campground that includes Lake Ohrbach and is the only Scout camp in New York City. The camp is utilized by Scouts citywide as well as Troops from New Jersey and other states. Pouch Camp is situated in the heart of the Greenbelt, one of Staten Island largest parks.

Reacting to the news, Eagle Scout Alex Zablocki, joined by Eagle Scouts Brandon Linker and Dominick DeRubbio, started a grassroots movement to help save the camp.  To date, over 4,700 people have joined the efforts on the social networking site Facebook and over 2,500 people, Scouts and non-scouts, from across New York City and out of state, have signed an online petition to save Pouch Camp.  A website was created, www.savepouch.com, with all information on these efforts.

Zablocki, Linker and DeRubbio, along with other co-organizers, are organizing a rally on Saturday, December 12, 2009, starting at 5pm.  Over 500 people have responded already and it is expected 500-1,000 supporters will attend the rally, which will end at Pouch Camp at 6:30pm, where a holiday lighting event will take place.

Besides a peaceful rally and numerous speakers, supporters will carry candles while marching to Pouch Camp as well as rally signs. All elected officials have been invited.  Boy Scouts are asked to wear Class A Uniforms to the event and are encouraged to bring flashlights.
